UUCGB's History

We have been located in Stratford for the past 58 years. Previously, we were located in downtown Bridgeport since 1836 and so we have retained “of Greater Bridgeport” in our name.  We were a Universalist Church before the denominational merger in 1961. The often controversial P.T.Barnum was a member of our church and was the author of an informative essay entitled “Why I Am A Universalist”. Also, while Barnum was a member, we called the Reverend Olympia Brown to our pulpit.  Reverend Brown, who was only the second woman ordained as a minister in any faith in America, served UUCGB for several years in the 1860s.
